GU-Q Achievements Towards Environmental Sustainability

  • GU-Q was the first Branch Campus to set up direct agreements for recycling of plastic, paper and cardboard, batteries and metal. QF have now adopted this and we recycle through them. Recently they have added e-waste to this service. 
  • In 2012 GU-Q Facilities won the Education City “Best Performance by a Department” Sustainability Award for our many awareness initiatives.
    • In 2012 figures showed a reduction versus 2011 in:
      • Energy consumption of 32%
      • Paper consumption of 25%
      • Plastic bottle consumption of 23%
  • Awards:

    • Georgetown Recycles and Contributes to Instilling a Culture of Sustainability in Qatar
  • We have worked to raise awareness of sustainability matters through a number of initiatives including:
    • Reduce, Reuse, Recycle campaigns
    • Green Office participation – turning off, equipment and lights when not in use.
    • Bring your own mug – to reduce consumption of plastic cups. 
    • Discount at Filicori if you bring your own mug
    • Free issue of reusable water bottles to the whole campus
    • Ceased use of plastic water bottles in pantries glass jugs and glasses only.
    • QF have recently done the same allowing us to eliminate plastic bags and bottles in Filicori and IFS.
    • Raised awareness on personal food waste
    • Portion sizes
    • Our Cafeteria implemented 50% discount for the food (from 3:00 pm to 3:30 pm) to counter cafeteria food waste. Targeted at Service Providers

    • Water and electricity awareness campaigns for home and office. In conjunction with QSTP researchers on water sustainability.
    • Conducted Service providers bazaar to give back to the community 
    • Conducted Help Classes to educate our Service Providers – giving back to the community in order to build a better and strong skilled community. 
    • We have taken part in sustainability campaigns the Qatar Green Business Council (QGBC) over the years most recently in 2019. Worked with QF’s environmental and waste teams on joint initiatives. Shared our practices with other institutions inside and out with Education City to enable them to “Go Green”.

    • Planted Trees for each graduating class.
    • Student-Led Sustainability Club
    • Recycling plants site visits.
